Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Are Now Legally Married

Published by sfreeman at 4:42 am under Current Events, General Coverage Edit This

On Saturday, August 16th, Ellen and her partner of four years got married in
California.

California recently legalized gay marriage and this marriage may be the highest profiled wedding so far in the state. According to E!, Ellen and actress Portia de Rossi married Saturday night at their home in Beverly Hills that they purchased about a year ago.

While this was not a secret (Ellen told viewers during the Ellen DeGeneres Show that she would be marrying de Rossi), The two managed to keep the details of the ceremony quiet until after they made their union official.

A few months ago on her the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she and Presidential Candidate John McCain discussed his opinion in regards to same sex marriages, and although was pretty frank that he was against it, was very polite (politically speaking) to DeGeneres during the discussion. She was very outspoken back in May when the same sex marriage ban was overturned about her intentions on marrying her partner and went on to say that “It just feels like there is this old way of thinking that we are not all the same. We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same.”

Ellen even asked if McCain would walk her down the aisle…and of coarse he wouldn’t comment. But they did end the discussion on friendly terms and he wished her happiness.

The ceremony took place in front of a small group of close family and friends. Among the guests that attended were both of their mothers (Portia’s mom flew in from Australia for the nuptials).

Ellen first came out to the world about her sexuality in 1997 making broadcast history on her show Ellen. Her character on the show “Ellen” came out about her sexuality, making her the first openly gay lead character on network television. She previously dated Anne Heche before she started her relationship with the former “Ally McBeal” actress.

E! stated on their website that City planning officials told them that the couple may want to consider blocking off their end of the street (presumably due to protests and demonstrators against their marriage) but would have to get approval through a public hearing first.

While there is still a possibility of appeals and another overturn of the same sex marriage law in
California, DeGeneres and de Rossi are now legally married regardless of the opinions of anyone who may be against their union.

I read somewhere that even if the bil is reversed in November, all marriages prior would still be recognized. I do not foresee the bill to ban gay marriages making it on the November ballot.
